Bites of Down Under

  • Venison and Mushrooms with Truffle Foam
These are some of our favorite bites from down under. The lamb was always good, the local fish was a sure bet and we tried to sample new things everywhere we went. Some went down easier than others. Fish eyes were not so good, but the kangaroo was interesting. Whitebait in Hokitika, tiny little bait-size fish caught with a net, are prepared in an omelette and are much better than anticipated. There was surprisingly little chicken on the menu anywhere we went and the caliber of sauces was quite impressive. A burger doesn't necessarily mean 2 all beef patties on a sesame seed bun, rather it indicates a style of sandwich filled with your choice of ingredients. Kabob and fish and chip joints are everywhere and serve freshly made, nice quality food. And of course, the local brew or wine washed everything down nicely.
